The fanboi in me is squeeing like crazy over this interview... I think trenk handled all of that with real class, and it was so obvious that the interviewer is so far up the record company's ass that his boot soles are hard to view. Fuck JJJ <_<

What precise part of this interview, that was most probably very heavily cut down to fit the five minute segment on air, makes you think that the interviewer is 'up the record company's ass'?

Pecisely! The question about does TR think he "owes" the record company anything for all their promotion. It sounded weighted to me. Just my opinion of course.

Did you listen to the segment or just read the transcript? His intonation during that specific question suggests to me that he is in a sense playing devil's advocate, and being a bit cheeky in the process, perhaps phrasing it as if it is in defense of the record label to get an gut reaction from Trent about the assumption that he's now taking advantage of his popularity that has grown over the past 16 years, which also happens to coincide with the time he was in a major record contract with said label.

If you consider how many years Interscope took advantage of Trent's talent and increasing popularity to bump up their bottom line (Downward Spiral Deluxe Edition, as cool as it was, I'm looking at you) I think it's sweet irony for the label to claim that Trent is making money of a profile he cultivated whilst under contract, thereby in a sense are 'ripping them off'.

I feel the question was born out of a genuine interest and not as a thinly veiled stab at Trent on behalf of his former record label as you seem to have taken it. It's something that I have wondered also, and it was good to get Trent's view on the matter, and I'd like to see what the record label has to say in return.

yeah, I thought if anything the journalist was pro-Trent, (but stopped short of being sycophantic, so that's okay).

Interesting interview, but not much new information. I want to know more about the music, not the model!

Thanks a ton for the transcription Em, that was great. One thing I noticed:

As opposed to the Bayton Switch, the practice of illicitly changing a worn horse for an identical, fresh one during endurance horse races, as practiced by the rascally 19th-Century jockey Mortimer Bayton.

It was particularly interesting to me to see details of the business end revealed, in terms of capital outlay and such.

rynne: nice McSweeney's moment there. :P

No worries, it wasn’t taken as such; it was a good excuse to link to a comic that I particularly like.

I did listen after reading the transcript. You may be right about the tone of voice, it just struck me as an attempt to stir TR into anger, same as those idiots who like to yell out during "hurt" at the concerts.
But it was interesting anyway.

That was one of the key parts that Trent mumbled and I've never heard of either a 'Bayton switch' or 'bait-and-switch' so I took a punt.

i didnt think he mumbled at all...
“You might try then, as I did, to find a sky so full of stars it will blind you again. Only no sky can blind you now. Even with all that iridescent magic up there, your eye will no longer trace constellations. You’ll care only about the darkness and you’ll watch it for hours, for days, maybe even for years, trying in vain to believe you’re some kind of indispensable universe-appointed sentinel, as if just by looking you could actually keep it all at bay. It will get so bad you’ll be afraid to look away, you’ll be afraid to sleep.”

Well obviously our opinions differ. As I stated earlier, he mumbled through two rather important phrases (kudos to Goose for picking out the first one, will edit original post to reflect accordingly). If you would like to offer your transcription of the interview, by all means, feel free.

I dont think he mumbles per se, its more that his accent and delivery can be hard to understand.

I would answer this, but feel like goose will be much more gentle and understanding is his response.
